Istanbul – Feeding stray cats and dogs

The district municipality in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul, is feeding stray animals during the corona lockdown. While shops are closed, the local veterinary service units leave animal food at central places. In Istanbul, there are thought to be 130,000 dogs and 125,000 cats roaming free. Other measures of the municipality aim to prevent the spread of the virus in public places like bazaars and to support people in need.

Sultanbeyli Municipality has taken certain preventive measures against the spread of coronavirus and offers some services to its residents. Here are some examples:

The municipality delivers residents aged 65 and above, who live alone and have no one to take care of them, hot meals twice a day. The meals are cooked in the cafeteria of the municipality and then delivered to homes by the teams in accordance with the hygiene and health rules.

Additionally, the homes of elderly people have been disinfected and their basic needs such as food and cleaning materials were met. Our assisstant teams continue to help these people in doing grocery shopping, getting medicine from pharmacy or withdrawing cash from ATM’s.

To prevent the spread of the virus in marketplaces, the municipality is setting up sanitizer dispensers at the entrance of district bazaars, delivering masks and informing citizens about what they need to do to protect themselves and their families.

The municipality has set up a call center for citizens to report their demands easily and quickly. According to their demands, the relevant department teams are directed to address their needs.

During the lockdown of the cities, many animals living in the streets have difficulty in finding something to eat. Since all businesses were closed down, they can not feed these animals anymore. To ensure animals’ well-being, the municipality’s teams feed stray animals on a regular basis. The local veterinary service units leave animal food at central areas.
